Hygge and Hearth Guide to Getting The Most From Your Home Fragrance

Posted by Hygge and Hearth on

At Hygge and Hearth we believe that your home fragrance should look as good as it smells and have  carefully developed our ranges not only to look and smell great, but to last. The majority of our handcrafted products are refillable/reusable so you can keep enjoying them again and again.

To make this easier we have developed the guide to Getting The Most From Your Home Fragrance. From candle refills to longer lasting soy wax melts and the perfect placements for your reed diffusers, it’s all in here.

Getting the most from your Candles

Our candles at Hygge and Hearth have been specifically designed to be refillable and one of the questions we get asked the most is how to do this?

How to refill a candle

For both our Botanical and Soy Wax ranges the first step is to light the candle for a few minutes when it is near the end of its life, just enough to let the wax soften. Extinguish and allow to cool down a little, until it is safe to touch.  Then simply scoop out the remaining wax and dispose of. Alternatively you can pour hot water into the vessel and leave for a few hours and the soy wax will float to the top, which you can then remove and discard – our natural soy wax is biodegradable. Do not dispose of wax down the drain.

You can then clean and dry your jar thoroughly. It perfectly fine to use wash up liquid to remove any wax residue. If refilling a botanical candle it will not matter if water and washing up detergent comes into contact with the gel wax – simply shake off the excess and very gently pat dry or leave to air dry. This is also useful for removing dust! When your candle is dry just pop in one of our soy wax refills or use a tealight and your candle will be like new again.

To prolong your botanical candle it is recommended that it is placed out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Burning your candle

When you first burn your new candle or refill it is important to allow the wax pool to flow to the edges of the container to help prevent the candle from tunneling (where to centre melts but not the edges). We recommend 2-3 hours for votives and up to 4 hours for the larger 30cl soy wax candles and that the candles are not left unattended. Read more in the Hygge and Hearth Guide to Home Fragrance Safety. Trim the wick before you light your candle again.

Getting the most from your Reed Diffuser

Designed to be refilled for infinite use, continue reading for some handy hacks to keep your reed diffuser looking and smelling like new for longer.

New diffusers and refills

When you first use your reed diffuser we recommend flipping the reeds after 6-8 hours to encourage the fragrance to travel along the whole reed stick. When you notice your fragrance fading just flip the reed sticks again. Hygge and Hearth diffuser refills come with 6 new reeds.

When refilling your diffuser bottle we recommend you do this on a flat surface and avoid any spillage, as it may cause damage. Use the reed sticks to gently move shells and botanicals to where you prefer them. Occasionally, a rogue shell can occur and float to the top. This is generally caused by an air bubble. This may be stopped by gently tapping on the glass or pushing and holding the shell down with a reed stick until the air is released.

Where to place your reed diffuser

Where you place your reed diffuser can directly influence the fragrance throw and longevity of your reed diffuser. While any room in the house is generally suitable, factors such as room size and temperature can affect your diffuser.

We recommend that you do not place your diffuser in full sunlight as it can hasten the botanicals fading and encourage the oil to evaporate more quickly. For the same reason it is not recommended to place your diffuser near to radiators. Diffusers should never be placed near open heat sources.

A large room my need more than one diffuser to achieve the desired scent throw. Reed diffusers are best in rooms with ambient temperatures as colder rooms can inhibit scent.

Getting the most from Soy Wax Melts

Our strongly fragranced wax melts are available as traditional wax melts or as wardrobe/drawer/room fresheners that can be then melted when the fragrance begins to fade.

Why your wax burner matters

Our wax melts are intended for use with burners that use tealights. The design of your wax burner can affect the scent throw and longevity of your wax melts. A wax burner that has more of a gap between the tealight and the wax bowl can increase the fragrance throw and the hours of your wax melts due to a lower, more even burning temperature. Leaving the wax melts or any soy wax product to cure longer can also increase fragrance. We managed 12 hours of fragrance from one of our Darjeeling & Tea Rose soy wax melts!

Soy Wax Botanical Room/Wardrobe Fresheners

Hygge and Hearth soy wax room fresheners can be hung up in any room to provide constant, convenient fragrance or they can be used in drawers and wardrobes to gently fragrance clothes. To get the most from these soy wax sachets when fragrancing clothes or bedding we recommend you place the wax sachet in the muslin bag provided. The material is porous and will allow the fragrance to circulate around the wardrobe or drawers without transferring any wax to your clothes. The muslin bag is not needed when used as a room freshener.

When the fragrance begins to fade, just remove the loop and break up the wax sachet and use as you would a wax melt.
